Overview of the Position

A permanent vacancy exists for a competent and reliable Workshop Assistant within the Bulk Water Services – Operations Department at the Zwartkopjes site in Johannesburg South. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong mechanical background who are looking to develop their careers in a technical and operational environment.

The Workshop Assistant will support plant maintenance activities by assisting with mechanical servicing, pump maintenance, inspections, repairs, and general workshop duties. The position plays a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of mechanical systems within the bulk water infrastructure.

Purpose of the Role

The Workshop Assistant will work closely with Mechanical Technicians and Artisans to maintain, repair, and overhaul pumps, motors, and related equipment. The role is critical in ensuring continuous plant operations, reducing downtime, and maintaining equipment reliability.

The successful candidate must be technically skilled, safety-conscious, and capable of working under pressure in a water services environment.


Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 / Matric (Essential)
  • N3 Certificate in Fitting and Turning

Trade Certification

  • Mechanical Trade Test Certificate (Fitting & Turning)

Experience

  • At least three years’ experience in pump maintenance
  • Practical experience in mechanical maintenance of plant equipment

License

  • Valid Code 08 Driver’s License

Key Responsibilities

1. Routine Maintenance

  • Perform daily mechanical maintenance on plant equipment
  • Inspect machinery for faults and safety risks
  • Report abnormal conditions to supervisors

2. Preventative Maintenance

  • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
  • Inspect parts for wear and replace components when required
  • Maintain maintenance records

3. Pump and Motor Overhauls

  • Strip, inspect, repair, and reassemble pumps and motors
  • Assist with alignment and reinstallation of equipment

4. Safety Compliance

  • Conduct safety checks and follow workplace safety procedures
  • Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions

5. Fault Diagnosis

  • Assist in identifying mechanical breakdowns
  • Support repair teams to restore equipment quickly

6. Machining and Fabrication

  • Perform basic machining such as grinding, drilling, milling, and turning
  • Assist with fabrication tasks when necessary

7. Welding and Cutting

  • Carry out welding and flame-cutting work when required

8. Rigging and Lifting Operations

  • Assist with lifting and moving heavy equipment safely

9. Standby Duties

  • Be available for emergency callouts and after-hours breakdowns
