Job Purpose – Driver/Messenger
The Driver/Messenger is responsible for the safe transportation of people, goods, and official documents across assigned areas. This role requires adherence to national road safety rules, efficient planning of delivery routes, and ensuring the secure handling of all materials transported.
In addition to driving and messenger duties, the role also includes administrative support, record management, postal services oversight, and compliance with the National Archives Act. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and reliability in every task.
Key Responsibilities
Messenger Services
- Collect and deliver correspondence to and from government institutions
- Verify and reconcile packages upon collection and delivery
- Maintain accurate delivery records and logbooks
- Obtain delivery signatures and receipts from recipients
- Sort items for efficient delivery routes
- Deliver documents to Document Services according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
- Plan routes effectively to save time and fuel
Administration
- Monitor messenger service availability at all times
- Ensure proper archiving of documents in line with RAF policies
- Sort, classify, and file records correctly
- Manage off-site record transfers and maintain logs
- Maintain inventory of departmental records
- Complete destruction registers for disposed records
- Oversee postal services within the branch
- Ensure efficient copying and binding services for all documents
Transport & Operations
- Load and unload goods and materials safely
- Transport staff, documents, and products securely
- Identify and report mechanical or electrical faults in vehicles
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Ensure that vehicles and office machinery remain in good working condition
- Report vehicle defects, accidents, and traffic violations promptly
Mail Processing
- Receive and register incoming and outgoing correspondence
- Sort and distribute mail appropriately
- Prepare registered, Docex, and bulk mail
- Record all registered mail details accurately
- Declare and record any monies received through mail services
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this Driver/Messenger position, candidates must have:
- Matric / Grade 12 certificate
- Valid Code 10 (EC1/EC) driver’s license
- Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP)
- At least 1 year of experience in a driving or messenger services environment
