Learner Pharmacist’s Assistant Programme Overview

The Department of Health and Wellness invites qualified applicants to apply for the Learner Pharmacist’s Assistant Programme 2026, which is implemented under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

This programme is aimed at empowering unemployed youth by providing structured workplace experience and accredited pharmaceutical training within public healthcare facilities.

Participants in this programme will:

  • Assist pharmacists in delivering efficient and cost-effective pharmaceutical services
  • Receive accredited training from a provider recognized by the South African Pharmacy Council
  • Work towards professional registration as a Post-Basic Pharmacist’s Assistant upon successful completion

Contract Duration and Training Phases

The Learner Pharmacist’s Assistant Programme is divided into two structured phases:

  • Phase One: A 12-month contract focused on obtaining the Basic Pharmacist’s Assistant qualification
  • Phase Two: A further 12-month contract, dependent on academic performance, to complete the Post-Basic Pharmacist’s Assistant qualification

Important Notice: Submission of an application does not guarantee placement in the programme. Mathematics Literacy will not be considered as a valid subject requirement.


Minimum Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria and clearly indicate them in their Curriculum Vitae:

  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years
  • Must possess a National Senior Certificate (Matric) with:
    • Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy will not be accepted)
    • Physical Sciences and/or Life Sciences
    • Or an equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4
  • All subject results must be clearly stated and included in the application

Monthly Stipend

Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of:

  • R5,345.75 per month
