What Does a General Laboratory Assistant Do?
The General Laboratory Assistant will support the daily activities of the blood bank and laboratory.
The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing, collecting and delivering blood bank hampers according to SANBS procedures and schedules. This includes preparing BRB hampers, collecting unused hampers within the required timeframes and collecting empty blood hampers from wards and designated collection points.

Another important responsibility is receiving and storing blood and blood products correctly. Stock must be packed into refrigerators, freezers and platelet agitators according to expiry dates. Blood stocks must also be checked, counted and arranged daily.

The General Laboratory Assistant will be required to follow SANBS Standard Operating Procedures when handling waste. Duties include ordering and receiving the required waste-disposal stock, attaching traceability labels and scanning containers using the CS Tracker system.
