South Africa’s informal economy is a vital source of livelihoods and local development. From spaza shops to food stalls, millions of people rely on it every day. Yet, many of these businesses remain excluded from digital transformation and formal economic structures. The Digital Innovation for Modernising the Informal Economy (DIME) Programme is working to change that through its 6-month Data Capturing Learnership Programme for 2025.
This learnership gives young people the opportunity to drive meaningful change in their communities while developing valuable professional skills. Participants will work as data capturing interns, playing an important role in helping township entrepreneurs access the tools, knowledge, and digital literacy needed to thrive.
Why the DIME Learnership Matters
The DIME Programme serves as a bridge between the informal and formal economy by equipping township businesses with digital skills, compliance knowledge, and sustainable practices. For interns, this is not simply a short-term placement—it is a platform to create real impact.
Interns will train, mentor, and guide small business owners, all while growing their own leadership, communication, and digital expertise.
