As a General Assistant, you will contribute to delivering excellent customer service, maintaining store presentation standards, supporting stock management, and ensuring a clean and safe shopping environment. Role Purpose
The General Assistant is responsible for enhancing the overall customer shopping experience by ensuring shelves are well-stocked, merchandise is neatly displayed, and store standards are consistently maintained. This role supports operational efficiency and store profitability through strong service delivery and adherence to procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Assist customers with product information and queries.
- Guide customers in locating products quickly and efficiently.
- Address and resolve customer concerns professionally.
- Maintain a friendly, helpful, and approachable attitude at all times.
Merchandising & Stock Control
- Pack and display stock according to store layout and planograms.
- Ensure shelves are fully stocked, clean, and visually appealing.
- Rotate products appropriately and handle merchandise carefully.
- Report low stock levels, damaged goods, or discrepancies to management.
Housekeeping & Cleanliness
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
- Unpack and merchandise stock promptly upon receipt.
- Ensure aisles remain clear and safe for customers.
- Verify that shelf pricing is accurate and properly displayed.
- Complete daily cleaning and maintenance checklists when assigned.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Adhere strictly to Occupational Health and Safety standards.
- Use required protective equipment when necessary.
- Ensure stock is stored and displayed safely.
- Report any safety hazards or irregularities immediately.
Stock Loss Prevention
- Report damaged or expired stock without delay.
- Handle merchandise carefully to prevent breakage.
- Remain vigilant for potential theft or suspicious behavior.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Grade 10 (NQF Level 3) with at least one year of relevant experience
OR - Grade 12 (Matric) with no prior work experience required
Skills & Competencies
- Clear communication skills in English and the dominant local language.
- Basic numeracy skills for calculations and stock handling.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to perform under pressure in a busy retail environment.
- Physically fit and able to stand for extended periods.
Additional Requirements
- Valid South African ID or legal work permit.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently when required.
