About the Programme
South African Airways Technical (SAAT) is offering a government-funded Technical Apprenticeship / Learnership Programme for 2026. This opportunity is aimed at unemployed young South Africans who are interested in building a career in the aviation and aerospace industry.
The programme provides free technical training combined with practical workplace experience. Learners will receive a monthly stipend while gaining industry-recognised skills in scarce technical trades. This initiative opens doors to long-term career growth, artisan qualifications, and possible permanent employment within the national airline and aviation sector.
Trades Available (Select Two in Order of Preference)
Aircraft Welding
Training includes welding and repairing aircraft and engine components, heat treatment, plasma spraying, and manufacturing aircraft parts and tooling. This trade is in high demand within the aviation maintenance industry.
Aircraft Spray Painting
Learners will gain skills in corrosion prevention, surface preparation, coating repairs, and painting aircraft interiors and exteriors. This pathway leads to technical careers within airline maintenance operations.
Aircraft Trimming
This trade focuses on the manufacturing, repair, inspection, and maintenance of aircraft interiors and safety equipment. It is a specialised skill within the aviation industry.
Aircraft Composite Structures
Training covers the manufacturing, repair, and inspection of composite aircraft components. Composite structures are widely used in modern aircraft and are among the most in-demand skills in aviation engineering.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Option 1: Grade 12 (Matric)
- Pure Mathematics: Minimum 50%
- Physical Science: Minimum 50%
- English: Pass
OR
Option 2: N3 Certificate
- Mathematics: Minimum 50%
- Engineering Science: Minimum 50%
This programme forms part of accredited SETA-funded training initiatives that prepare learners for vocational qualifications and real-world aviation work.
