Programme Overview
The programme is designed to equip trainees with the skills and practical experience to assist Train Drivers in the safe and efficient operation of various train types, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains. The goal is to ensure freight/cargo reaches its destination safely, on time, and in good condition.
Responsibilities
- Sign on and receive shift duties.
- Prepare locomotives: obtain equipment, check and supplement tools, clean working area, assist with brake tests, couple locomotives.
- Prepare and check communication equipment (radios, handsets, telemeters).
- Perform pre-trip preparation of trains and locomotives, including attaching/detaching vehicles, completing vehicle lists, brake tests, and mounting indicators.
- Execute shunting activities according to work orders, place and clear trucks at sidings.
- Assist the Train Driver en route to ensure safe train movement, observe signals, protect train during incidents, and provide feedback.
- Perform administrative duties, including completing the train journal for salary processing.
Requirements
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science.
- Minimum age: 21 years.
- Minimum height: 1.6 m.
- Physical fitness, hearing, and vision must meet safety standards (verified by medical tests).
- Psychomotor ability (assessed via Vienna Testing System standards).
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
- Willingness to undergo Train Assistant training and certification, both theoretical and practical.
- Periodic medical and behavioral safety assessments.
