Umzimkhulu Local Municipality is calling on unemployed South African youth to apply for its Learner Firefighter Learnership Programme 2026. This 12-month training opportunity provides structured learning, practical emergency response experience, and a monthly stipend for qualifying candidates interested in a career in firefighting and public safety.

Applicants must be permanent residents of Umzimkhulu Local Municipality (proof of residence required).


About the Learnership

This programme combines classroom-based instruction with hands-on firefighting training. Successful learners will gain practical exposure to emergency services and community safety initiatives.

Participants will:

  • Assist with firefighting and rescue operations under supervision
  • Support emergency and disaster response services
  • Participate in drills, training sessions, and formal assessments
  • Contribute to fire prevention and community awareness programmes
  • Maintain firefighting equipment and perform station duties

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
  • Firefighter One qualification
  • Hazmat Awareness certification
  • Medical and physical fitness suitable for strenuous duties
  • No criminal record

Added advantage:

  • Valid Code B (or higher) driver’s licence

Applicants must be prepared to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and operate in high-pressure environments.
