South Africa’s mining industry is seeking emerging engineering talent and is offering a unique opportunity for young people to gain practical skills and a nationally recognised qualification. The Valterra Platinum Engineering Learnership Programme 2026 provides hands-on experience in the mining sector and is open to motivated, unemployed South African citizens. Applications will close on 3 April 2026, so applicants should submit their applications as soon as possible.


What is the Valterra Platinum Engineering Learnership Programme?

This programme is an eighteen point two month learnership that combines classroom-based theory with practical workplace experience in mining operations. Upon completion, participants will earn a national Artisan qualification, which can open doors to a long-term career in engineering and the mining sector.


Who Can Apply?

The learnership is open to unemployed South African citizens from all provinces. Preference will be given to applicants who reside in host communities near mining operations.

General Entry Requirements

  • Grade Twelve or equivalent, with a minimum of forty percent in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English.
  • Alternatively, an N Two or higher qualification covering relevant trade subjects, with a minimum of forty percent in each subject.

Trade-Specific Requirements

Applicants must meet the subject prerequisites for the trade they are applying for. Candidates who hold an NCV Level Four qualification in the relevant trade and have passed all subjects with a minimum of forty percent also meet the criteria.
