Qualified firefighters are invited to apply for a Fire Fighter position within the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate. This role offers the chance to serve communities on the front line and work in a dynamic, emergency response environment.

About the Role

Fire Fighters will respond to emergencies, protect communities, and maintain readiness of firefighting equipment. The position requires physical fitness, shift work, and flexibility to serve at any fire station within the City’s jurisdiction.


Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to firefighting and emergency incidents
  • Prepare for emergencies and minimize fire impact
  • Support a safe working environment for firefighters and communities
  • Maintain fire service appliances and equipment
  • Perform administrative tasks
  • Contribute to training and skills development

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12
  • Accredited Certificates: Firefighter 2, Hazmat Operations
  • Driver’s Licence: Code B
  • First Aid: Level 3 (in-date) or higher (HPCSA registered)
  • Minimum 3 years continuous firefighting experience (including training)
  • No criminal record
  • Ability to pass fitness assessments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wildland Firefighter 1 Certificate
  • Respiratory Protection Certificate
  • Driver Pump Operator Certificate

Special Conditions

  • Shift work is required
  • Must be ready to work at any fire station as directed
  • Uniform and protective gear must be worn
  • Operational allowance applies
  • Additional training at the Fire Training Academy may be required before deployment

Assessment Process

Candidates who pass the fitness assessment will undergo:

  1. Behavioural interview
  2. Criminal record check (fingerprints)
  3. Medical evaluation
  4. Compulsory drug test
